A regular new fixture has just landed in King’s Cross, organised by local friends Sara Pupi and Sophie Stuckey.

“I have actually grown up in King’s Cross,” says Sophie. “And my family and I still live here. We just hope to enable people in the area to access high-quality fresh food while supporting local small-scale producers.”

The food assembly takes place weekly on Sundays at the community-owned pub King Charles I, and locals are invited to meet farmers, food makers and their neighbours, taste local food samples and enjoy some live music.

What to expect? Tasty sourdough bread from Dusty Knuckle, a social enterprise offering employment to youth offenders, early school leavers and the long term unemployed; ChicP’s sweet and savoury hummus made from surplus fruit and vegetables; honey from hives in Herne Hill and Nunhead; and beer from Toast Ale, who fight food waste by making beer from surplus bread – and giving their profits back to the charity Feedback.

All the food comes from an average distance of 33 miles, compared to the 600 miles with a supermarket, usually within hours of being picked or cooked.

A nice addition then to the various markets and happenings in nearby Granary Square.

King’s Cross Food Assembly is on Sundays, 1pm-3pm, King Charles I, 55-57 Northdown St N1 9BL
