Squirrel yourself away in VOC
Tucked under an archway in King’s Cross, this candle-lit bar is the perfect cold weather hideaway. Named after the Dutch East India Company, the cosy bar is filled with bottles that look like magic potions. Barrels are filled with cocktails suspended from the ceiling, and huge church candles drip against exposed brickwork. The idea is that the barrel-aged drinks and bespoke designed cocktails replicate the feel of a 17th Century drinking den. There’s an atmospheric restaurant, too. More info. 2 Varnisher’s Yard N1
Eat top food in a revamped pub
Adam Rawson is a pretty hot (scrub that, award-winning) young chef, having bagged stints with Nuno Mendes, Claude Bosi and Gordon Ramsay under his belt. He’s just launched his first extended kitchen residency at The George & Dragon pub in Fitzrovia, the theme being what he calls his collection of “Global Traveller” burgers. Expect things like The Peruvian with aged beef, crispy pork, aji rocotto ketchup, and salsa criolla; and the Global Traveller, pimped up with gorgonzola, balsamic onions, pancetta and truffle aioli. Chuck in “proper” onion spiced chips and this is next-level streetfood. Just opened by Warren Street tube, The George & Dragon is also a lovely spot for a beer. This new arrival is a little way down King’s Cross Road in the direction of always lovely Exmouth Market. Choose from an espresso-based menu, plus a choice of three single-origins on filter (as either a pour-over through the V60 or an Aeropress), with the beans changing on a seasonal basis.
