Not only can you spend almost as long in the store as perusing the permanent exhibitions, but every purchase goes to help the survival of the Library itself. The shop part of this multi-purpose two-floor venue sells affordable gifts and homewares from independent designers, tea, and yarn. In the cafe bar you can buy vintage furniture, the stuff on the walls – and even your tea spoon. Open 1030am-late. 9 Caledonian Rd, N1

3. Wellcome Collection

Inspiring is one word: this museum shop stocks a wide selection of books exploring “what it means to be human”, complementing the themes from the exhibitions. There are cards, postcards and unusual gifts, from souvenirs to limited edition prints. If you want a ‘blood bath’ shower gel, you know where to find it. 10am till 6pm. 183 Euston Rd, NW1

4. Housmans

This bookshop opened its doors in 1945 and is owned and run by the Peace Movement. Like the literature it sells, the store employs and attracts people who support a wide range of political movements, from communists and pacifists to feminists and anarchists. Whether you’re absolutely certain of your political leanings, or are just interested in browsing the titles as potential gifts for loved ones, everyone is welcome. 10-630pm daily. 5 Caledonian Rd, N1

Fortnum & Mason, established way back in 1707 in Piccadilly, is one of the world’s swankiest destinations for a spot of retail therapy. Now north Londoners can rejoice that there’s a branch in St Pancras International, where you’ll find a range of food and wines, handy gift hampers, and tea, as well as a tea salon which offers handy all-day dining. 7am -9pm daily. 1A St Pancras International Station N1C

6. Hamley’s

What to say about London’s oldest and arguably most loved toy shop? The St Pancras branch is pretty darn convenient too, with a raft of squeaking, bleeping, whizzing and chiming products, plus travel games to keep the kids entertained if you’re about to hop on a train for an Xmas break. 7. YouTube’s Creator Store

Vloggers are big news (ask any teen) and the biggest have become superstars who’ve published books, started clothing lines, coffee brands and more. You can find all these items at Youtube’s first one-stop shopping destination, from T-shirts to gamer’s posters or one of Zoella’s fragrances. There are meet ‘n’ greets with the young stars too. Since 2009, this pioneering ethical food outlet has brought something of a farmer’s market vibe to the unusual setting of St Pancras station. There’s carefully, erm, sourced produce from small producers in the UK, or for a winning Xmas present for a foodie in your life you could do worse than one of their luxury hampers. 630am-9pm. 28a St Pancras International Station N1C
